Volvo, the great Swedish car maker, has been manufacturing since the early 1900s and was originally a subsidiary of SKF - a ball bearing manufacturer. The name Volvo is derived from volvere, the Latin word for “I roll”, and its intended use was as a name for a new series of ball bearings. That idea was short-lived.
Volvo is one of the most respected cars brands in the world and is always ahead of the curve when it comes to design and technology. The company not only manufactures road vehicles but also produces other products such as trucks, buses and construction equipment.
Volvo was bought by the Ford Motor Group in 1999 but was acquired by Chinese multinational Geely Holding Group in 2010. Volvo continues to be an innovator in the road car market and heralds an ‘all-electric’ future, announcing it will make every one of its models available as electric from 2019 onwards.
Volvo has been a successful competitor in touring car racing around the world since the 1990s. Volvo even had a brief, but very successful, stint in the Australian Supercars Championship and continues to be a highly-regarded marque in the world of motorsport.
