The expansion tank cap, also known as the radiator cap, acts as a pressure valve. When the temperature inside the radiator becomes too great, and consequently the pressure builds, the valve is forced open and the hot coolant is released into the coolant expansion tank. The vehicle should always be allowed to cool down for at least thirty minutes before unscrewing this cap as the hot, pressurised coolant can cause nasty burns if it explodes with force – really not a good plan!
