Considered one of the most influential figures in the automotive industry, Frenchman Andre Citroen set up his first company, La Société des Engrenages Citroën, when he was just 24-years old. After the First World War, he converted his company into a car-manufacturing business and began building vehicles. His vision was to make cars an affordable, everyday item.
Citroen established its reputation for developing innovative technology in 1934 with the Traction Avant, the world’s first mass-produced front-wheel drive. Then in 1954, Citroen produced the world's first hydropneumatic self-levelling suspension system before manufacturing the DS in 1955 which was the first mass-produced car with disc brakes. The company has since gone on to win many national and international automotive awards.
In December 1974, Peugeot S.A acquired shares in Citroen. They increased this April 1976 and created PSA (Peugeot Societe Anonyme) Group which still owns Citroen today.
Citroen has also enjoyed a successful history in motorsport and continues to be a racing powerhouse in multiple categories.
