How to Replace a Gas Strut in Your Car
Replacing a gas strut in your car can be an easy task if you follow the correct steps. Remember, safety comes first, so you should always have someone with you to hold the bonnet or boot while you are replacing the struts.
Here's a simple step-by-step guide:
- Assess the Situation: Open the bonnet and locate the gas struts. They should be on either side of the bonnet or boot, attached with bolts or clips.
- Support the Bonnet, boot or tailgate: Ensure the bonnet or boot is securely supported. A broom handle or similar tool can work if you don't have an assistant to help.
- Remove the Old Gas Strut: Start with the bottom of the strut. Use a flat-head screwdriver to remove the clip holding the strut in place. Do the same for the top of the strut. Remove the strut and set it aside. Do one strut at a time to avoid the bonnet or boot falling.
- Attach the New Gas Strut: Hold the new strut in place, making sure the piston rod is facing down. Attach the bottom of the strut first, followed by the top, securing each with the clips or bolts provided.
- Check the Installation: Once you've installed the new strut, check its operation by opening and closing the bonnet or boot. It should open and close smoothly without any jerks or quick movements.
- Repeat for the Other Side: If your vehicle has two gas struts, repeat these steps for the other side.
Note that the specific process may vary depending on your car's make and model, and the type of gas strut you are using. Always refer to your vehicle's manual or consult a professional if you're unsure.
