Over one hundred years ago, a German car pioneer named August Horch established a new auto company which he called Audi. He was prohibited from using his surname Horch in his new company name because he had been sued for trademark infringement by previous business partners. So instead chose Audi. Why? “Horch” in German means “hark” or “hear”. Translated into Latin, it becomes “Audi” which means “to listen”.
Audi initially introduced their cars to Europeans through motorsport and achieved victories in rally. Then in, the first left-hand-drive road car was introduced to the German market. Economic pressures through the Great Depression led to Audi merging with three other auto companies in a bid to survive.
The new company allotted one market segment to each of their brands and designed a new four-ceiling ring logo to represent the four merged companies. Deluxe mid-sized cars were Audi’s market segment, and that initial four-ring symbol is still the basis of the brand logo today. Since its inception, Audi has taken many forms, and at the end of the Second World War, its operations were even confiscated and closed by occupying Soviet forces. But great brands survive.
Today, Audi is one of the top ten car brands in the world. Its technology is world-renown, and it’s Quattro all-wheel-drive system has millions of fans across the globe. It also continues to be a main player in the world of motorsport.
